Connie Leyva, Executive Director of KVCR Public Media and former State Senator, has been named Woman of the Year for California’s 29th State Senate District by State Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes.

In accepting the honor, Leyva shared, “I am deeply honored to be named Woman of the Year for Senate District 29 and to join my former colleague in this recognition. I look forward to continuing to engage with communities across KVCR’s broadcast region so our work fully reflects the diverse voices, people, and issues that define our region.”

Leyva, who served in the California State Senate from 2014 to 2022, was a strong advocate for education, championing initiatives in kindergarten access, childcare, and financial aid reform. She also led efforts in environmental justice and women’s issues throughout her tenure.

At KVCR Public Media, Leyva has guided the implementation of the station’s long-range strategic plan, which focuses on:

Expanding student training opportunities for careers in media and journalism

Broadcasting PBS, NPR, and FNX – First Nations Experience, the nation’s only 24/7 Native American and World Indigenous television channel

Growing content that reflects Riverside and San Bernardino counties

Strengthening community partnerships and increasing fundraising efforts

Under her leadership, KVCR continues to deepen its connection with communities across the Inland Empire and beyond. Leyva oversees staff operations, production, and evolving technologies to deliver KVCR and FNX content throughout Inland Southern California and nationwide.
